Bloodsport (1988) is, without a doubt, not only the finest movie in the great Jean-Claude Van Damme’s back catalogue, but the greatest martial arts film ever made.
Yes, better than Enter The Dragon. And yes, better than Ong Bak.
The difference? The sheer diversity in the kick-ass fight scenes.
Even now, an unfrickingbelievable twenty years later, it’s pretty much the only example of mixed martial arts (MMA) to make it to the big screen (or even direct to video). That’s pretty amazing given the success of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), and the like. Sure, later this year we’ve got Redbelt to look forward to, but that’s about it in the MMA world. (I’m ignoring teenage fodder like Never Back Down).
What Bloodsport isn’t, however, and this came as a crushing blow for millions of fans around the world, is a true story. Despite what it says on the box, it’s not even based on a true story. It’s based on a package of bull, fed to the kind of gullible dipshits that existed at the beginning (and the end) of the 1980s.
Allegedly based on real-life events that took place at the end of the 1970s, Bloodsport features Jean-Claude Van Damme as Frank W. Dux (pronounced ‘Dukes’), an American who claims to have been trained in the ways of ninjutsu - i.e., to be a ninja - during his adolescent years in Woodland Hills, California.
By his neighbours.
Now, let’s analyse these facts for a moment. It’s very difficult - naturally - to find a lot of concrete data about Dux. We’ll come to the reasons behind that later (but obviously it has something to do with his secret life in the CIA), but I can only find one site on the entire Internet that lists his birthdate, and that claims it was January 31, 1971.
Which means that when Bloodsport went into production, Dux was 17.
To make matters worse, IMDb claims that Dux played the part of “Old man in car” in 1986’s action classic, Highlander. As a 15-year old!? Give that boy an Oscar!
But hold on: the tournament featured in Bloodsport, The Kumite, was allegedly dominated by the real-life Dux at the tail end of the 1970s… when he hadn’t even hit puberty.
No wonder the guy is such a legend.

Clearly, the website above isn’t entirely accurate (damn you, Geocities, that’s the last time I’ll buy into your lies.)
However, I can’t find a single plausible recording of Dux’s birth date, so I’m going to have to work some mathematical wizardry here. Van Damme was born in 1960, and was 28 when Bloodsport was released. Dux claims to have fought in the Kumite between 1975 and 1981, so if we assume he was the same age as Van Damme portrayed him, that would make him 28 in 1975, which means he was born in 1947.
Which makes him 61 today.
And 13 in 1960. So let’s assume that is so. The young Dux, maybe he’s a troublemaker. Maybe he’s not doing so well at school - maybe it’s not his fault as his dad changes jobs all the time and the family has to move, and the poor kid never gets a chance to settle, and the few friends he’d had he’s been forced to leave behind. His mother drinks too much. His ‘Uncle’ - really a non-relative whom his mum is probably fucking behind his dad’s back - is a little too friendly with his ‘wrestling’. What the kid needs is stability. What he needs is direction. What he needs is a mentor.
And, fuck me, he only goes and moves next door to a family of ninjas.
In California. In 1960.
I don’t really think that happened. I mean, first of all, I don’t believe there is any recorded evidence of ninjutsu training, at least not in any kind of genuine sense, outside of Japan until Stephen K. Hayes returned to the USA in the early 1980s, fresh from the teachings of Masaaki Hatsumi, who was the personal student of the the last known active ninja, Toshitsugu Takamatsu.
And correct me if I’m wrong, but ninjas didn’t even really exist until Chuck Norris’ seminal The Octagon in 1980. Certainly not to Western audiences.
Also, this (to the right) is what he used to look like, probably sometime in the late 80s/early 90s, by the garb and badass weaponry (click to enlarge).
Now, I’m sorry, but that’s blatantly a picture of the young Steven Seagal, which makes this all even more of a hoax!
But we haven’t even begun to scratch on the surface of shite that makes up the life of Mr Dux.
As said, Frank claimed to have fought in the Kumite between 1975 and 1981. (One major difference is Dux’s Kumite allegedly took place in Jamaica, and not Hong Kong as in the film.)
“My involvement in that tournament was part of a plan, launched in 1975, to infiltrate the criminal organizations that organized the fights. The original idea was to participate in the Kumite tournament and make a few contacts. We initially assumed I would lose, but eventually I became one of the best Kumite fighters to ever participate in the event.”
At the end of Bloodsport, the film gives a mini-bio of Dux and lists his accomplishments in the tournament. They’re actually a bit mental.
This motion picture is based upon true events in the life of Frank W. Dux.
From 1975 to 1980 Frank W. Dux fought 329 matches. He retired undefeated
as the World Heavy Weight Full Contact Kumite Champion.Mr. Dux still holds four world records:
Fastest Knockout - 3.2 seconds
Fastest Punch with a Knockout - .42 seconds
Fastest Kick with a Knockout - 72 mph
Most Consecutive Knockouts in a Single Tournament - 56Subsequently Mr. Dux founded the first American Ninjitsu System, Dux-Ryu.
Now, let’s have a quick gander at that data. 329 matches, undefeated. That’s over seven tournaments (1975-81). So roughly 47 opponents per tournament.
What the fuck?
But it goes on to say he holds the record for most consecutive knockouts in a tournament, at 56. Now, unless that same tournament lasted about a month, and not three frickin’ days like it does in the movie, I’ve gotta raise my hand on this one, too.
And consider the way the data is presented for his other records. He holds the record for the fastest knockout at 3.2 seconds, but this seems to clash with his stat for ‘fastest punch with a knockout’, at 0.42 seconds, which also clashes with his ‘fastest kick with a knockout’, which for some reason is measured in miles per hour.
Clearly, somebody made all this shit up in two minutes. You can make up your own mind who.
In his hard-to-find 1996 book, The Secret Man, Dux states that he was approached by CIA director William Casey to become a paramilitary agent for top-secret missions around the world, and that he made significant contributions to the training manual used by the Navy Seals. Luckily for Dux, Casey died in 1987, a year before Bloodsport was released, and Dux’ boasts became public knowledge.
(Oddly, Steven Seagal would make similar claims on both fronts many years later.)
In that same book, Dux boasted about how he once punched through bulletproof glass.
And that he fought in Vietnam.
It didn’t really add up. Using the Freedom of Information Act, researcher B.G. Burkett obtained a copy of Dux’s Marine Corps records, and thereby discovered that Dux served in the Marine Corps Reserve in the U.S. from 1975 to 1981, never seeing any overseas action. If we assume that this data is correct, it means that not only was Dux not even in the military during the United States efforts in Vietnam (which ended for the USA in 1972), but that during his alleged 329 match-winning run in the Kumite, in Jamaica, he was actually a jarhead, at home.
Burkett published his findings in his 1998 book, Stolen Valor: How the Vietnam Generation Was Robbed of Its Heroes and Its History. When the book was praised in US gun-totin’ bible Soldier Of Fortune, alongside claims that Dux’ was a wannabe, Dux sued the magazine for defamation of character.
But wait - it gets weirder. After the success of Bloodsport, Dux and Van Damme became pals, with the former even dating Jean-Claude’s sister-in-law at one point. Dux had written a follow-up to Bloodsport, The Kumite, and the plan was for Van Damme to again portray his friend in the title role. (Three sequels had already been made to the original film, but none of them starred Van Damme or had any involvement from Dux.) Dux received $50,000 for his script, and claimed that Van Damme verbally agreed to pay him 2.5 per cent of the movie’s gross.
Except Van Damme hadn’t agreed, or at least, that’s what he said. In court. Yes, in 1998 Dux sued again, in a case that was heavily covered in the States, and one that he would ultimately lose, both in a financial and credibility sense. All kinds of shit came out. Dux’ military and martial arts record was heavily scrutinised and even his close friends suggested that various claims he’d made, including his infamous bulletproof glass punch, were hoaxes perpetrated by Dux himself.
Richard Alexander, Dux’s friend for 20 years, testified that the plaintiff’s feat of breaking bullet-proof glass with a single punch was a hoax. According to Alexander, the bullet-proof glass was really Plexiglas that Dux had found. Alexander also described another allegedly staged stunt in which Dux shattered a candied glass bottle that appeared to be real glass. This “long-time friend” called Dux a liar who “tries to get something for nothing.”
(From Court TV Online.)
The single thing that has benefitted Dux the most is how gullible - nay, stupid - people are, or certainly were back in the days of yore. Even now, if you Google his name, half of the many pages you’ll find will be dumbly listing his various claims and boasts as fact, while the other half will be holding up red flags. But apart from a couple of web sites (listed below), nobody is really calling the guy a fraud. The allegations, on both sides, are impossible to prove.
And does it really matter? It was twenty years ago and nobody really cares. But pick up a copy of Bloodsport tomorrow and it’ll still say “based on a true story” on the front cover, even though anyone who is prepared to scratch just a little at the surface will see that it’s blatantly not.
This is Frank Dux in 2001.
Oh wait - is that Tim Burton? My bad. Either way, he’s approximately 54 in that picture, so he’s obviously doing something right. Yeah - lying through his frickin’ teeth.

Update: On June 4, 2008, a person claiming to be the real Frank Dux contributed a lengthy rebuttal to my article. In the interest of being entirely fair, I’ve published it in full for you to read below in the comments section (as he asked), as well as my reply. Frank also included details of his official site (cached link) and MySpace page.

I am Brazilian and aways watched Bloodsport when I was young, this week I took the movie and watched it again, after I decided to get more knowlege about the Dux Ryu martial sience and it`s main directions. Well, I realized that there are a lot of marketing around Mr Dux and inside the websites we find tips about martial movements and points to be striked, what I think is dangerous, once a kid might whatch the old movie Bloodsport and decide to do the same as I did and use it against another kid. The point is none martial art or movement should be demonstraded or teached in a website, what about all that tradition from the movie, the old japanise master passing by his knowlege as a threasure? Waht I see is a capitalist institution using the marketing from the movie to acquire more students
Hi Carlo
Your advice is sound. However, I think the important thing to remember is that is a movie, inasmuch as it’s a work of fiction - it isn’t real.
Furthermore, as my article hopefully demonstrates, that despite what was alleged at the time, it’s also a movie that is based on an unreal reality.
Therefore, while there’s always a small risk that a very small percentage of individuals can be affected negatively by the contents of any violent film, I personally wouldn’t be too concerned about any impact Mr Dux has made on the world.
Thanks for your comment.

Unfortunately, I have continually been subjected to misquotes and misrepresentations becoming sources for others because of their being repeated.
I have attached a very thorough and accurate article by John Stevens, International News Service, that conducted a legitimate and unbiased investigation into what has been wrongfully said about me.
To recognize I am the REAL Frank DUX commenting, visit my myspace page where the photos and reprint of article I am forwarding to you might evoke I hope the need to correct some wrongs being committed here.
My only question is do you have the integrity and courage to post the article and/or replace yours with the one done by John Stevens, International News Service, or are you just like your sources creating controversy in order to unjustly profit by it?

TOO SHY TO ADDRESS THIS, I’D RATHER PRESENT WHAT AN AWARD WINNING INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALIST REVEALED ABOUT ME, REGARDING MY PUBLIC LIFE, WHOSE REPORTING STYLE IS OBSERVABLY OBJECTIVE, THOROUGH, ACCURATE AND BALANCED, AS FOLLOWS:
FRANK DUX AKA THE SECRET MAN by John Stevens, International News Service, March 7, 2008
Senate Intelligence Oversight/Congressional Hearing witness - Iran-Contra paymaster, Lt. Commander, Alexander Martin, USN, under penalty of perjury, identified Mr. Frank W. Dux as a covert operative who is responsible for having briefed him as one of the architects of Operation Cordoba Harbor.
Lt. Cmdr. Alexander Martin stated: “During my intelligence career, I have met with and been introduced to many covert operatives, whose existence has often been officially denied by the government agencies that these parties have been associated with. One of these covert operatives was one Frank Dux”
Major General Anatoly Korneinko, USSR, acting as an official spokesperson of Ukrainian/Former Soviet Military Authority declared, under penalty of perjury, Frank Dux is one of the world’s finest operatives, dubbed “O’hutnick” trans. “The Hunter.”
Major General Anatoly Korneinko in the forward of Dux book The Secret Man, HarperCollins, 1996, identified Frank Dux as having been trusted to have led a Top Secret operation at the height of the cold war between the USSR and US, that’s success or failure possibly determined the deployment of weapons of mass destruction.
Frank Dux activities are so secret his activities were even concealed from many of the people he served. Thus, it earned him the moniker – The Secret Man.
The publication of his best selling auto-biography, based upon his exploits — The Secret Man, HarperCollins, 1996, prompted an official public denial by the CIA, which hadn’t been done since the CIA denied its prior involvement with Eugene Hausenfaus and Watergate Plumbers. Lending credence to speculation Dux covert activities are highly sensitive with serious political overtones. Particularly, in light of new developments, in which 938 related public statements made by the CIA and Bush Administration have been proven to be false.
In professional circles, such as SPECWAR operators, like US Navy SEAL community, Mr. Frank W. Dux is often described as America’s real life answer to Mission Impossible: Ethan Hunt, particularly as his expertise and experience led him to becoming the contributing source creator of the coveted US Navy SEAL CFC manual K-431-0097.
A third generation descendant of Covert Operatives Frank Dux possessed the network, technical knowledge and experience to have built a highly distinguished reputation. Currently, putting his experience and knowledge to work in the civilian world via The Secret Man International Spy Shop[www.007spy.us.com]

Frank Dux (Martial Art / Bloodsport Legend)
While born in Toronto, Canada, the son of holocaust survivors/immigrants, Frank Dux grew up in North Hollywood, California. In the heart of the world renowned San Fernando Valley that in its heyday, of 1960’s through the 1980s, martial art aficionados refer to as the “Valley of Champions.” With all the worlds leading martial art competitors and instructors being based there along with emerging martial art trade magazines.
This had a profound effect on Frank Dux who attributes his ability to have access to such a wide variety of styles and leading experts, had led him to becoming the mixed martial art archetype, even founding his own style of martial art Dux Ryu Ninjitsu and FASST an acronym for (Focus-Action-Skill-Strategy-Tactics).
Frank Dux humble beginnings start with his studying under legendary former World Jujitsu Champion, Jack Seki (taught by Jiguro Kano, the founder of Judo), as well as Senzo Tanaka, (35th generation descendant of Koga Yamabushi lineage of Ninjitsu) as well as other notable greats that include, Kajukenpo Soke/Grandmaster, Bill Ryusaki (Bruce Lee’s sidekick and instructor to numerous PKA Champions) [www.duxryu.8m.com].
Grandmaster Ryusaki, in July 2002 documentary video on Kumite International Challenge, identifies Frank Dux thirst for knowledge was so great that being too poor to formally enroll in his classes Dux could be seen outside Ryusaki’s school practicing, with the side-walk as his matt and dojo. Grandmaster Ryusaki expressed it was his and his own father’s dream to fight in the Kumite, for which Black Belt Magazine, November 1980, documents from 1975 THROUGH 1980, Frank Dux reigned as IFAA/Kokuryukai World Full Contact Kumite (no-holds-barred) Champion; retiring undefeated, after 329 professional matches.
With 56 consecutive knockouts to his credit, the fastest knockout being 3.2 seconds, the fastest recorded punch with knockout .12 sec. and fastest recorded kick with knock out, 72mph, Frank Dux accomplishments made him so renowned and respected in the underground fight world that it finally leaked out and came to the attention of Black Belt Magazine, editor, John Stewart, having published three successive articles on Dux (Sept, Oct & Nov. 1980 issues) which before Dux emergence had been unprecedented.
In May 21, 1980 Black Belt magazine warranted prior to the beginning and rise of the Ninja craze of the 1980’s:
“…the fact is that there are only two genuine non-oriental ninja known to the world, today and one of them lives in Japan. The other is Frank Dux…Dux is a professional consultant in the field of martial arts, a full contact kumite champion and instructor some impressive students…While this magazine ordinarily does not act as a verification of skills or credentials in this case we happen to know the above statements are true” – John Stewart, Editor Black Belt magazine.
To date, Frank Dux has established 16 WORLD RECORDS; many of which have been standing for little over a quarter of a century, thereby, culminating in Frank Dux being inducted into five martial arts Halls of Fame, as a “Living Legend” (e.g. Action Martial Arts Magazine, 2001, World Family Head of Sokeship Council, 1998, etc.);
The Father of American Karate, Grandmaster, Ed Parker concurred what Action Martial Art magazine proclaimed: “What Babe Ruth is to Baseball, Frank Dux is to martial arts”
Screenwriter Sheldon Lettich brought Frank Dux to the attention of Hollywood film producer, Mark DiSalle, responsible for the 1998 motion picture based upon Frank Dux early life achievements, entitled Bloodsport.
Bloodsport catapulted the film career of then unknown actor, Jean Claude Van Damme, selected because of his keen resemblance to Frank Dux (blk. & wht. photo). The film is globally popular and is heralded a cult classic, having withstood the test of time still in syndication, 20 years after its theatrical release, in 1988.
Hollywood insiders attribute Bloodsport success to not only Frank Dux inspiring story but also his implementing a never seen before realistic fight choreography and camera technique Hollywood film makers adopt and use, still today, he developed with Cinematographer/DP David Worth. Setting in motion a long string of copycat formula films (i.e. Bloodfist, Cage, etc.) using the same premise but unable to attain the success of Dux film.
A random sampling of Frank Dux martial art achievements include:
• In 1975, by his fighting in shorts rather than martial art uniforms, as depicted in Bloodsport, in 1988 Frank Dux started fashion trend mixed martial art fighters follow today
• In 1980, Frank Dux broke with traditional methods and is the first to establish the First American School & Style of Nin-jitsu, thereby, challenging the Bunjinkan monopoly that was steadfastly promoting and strictly ascribing to traditional concepts of Ninjutsu, deeming any deviation as being not-authentic, in the 1980’s.
• Coached and Produced Over 25 Regional, National & Martial Art Full Contact World Champions (i.e. Jeremy McCloud, Sabaki World Champion, Antonio Silva, IKF, Valle Tudo World Champion, etc.).
• Recipient of California Youth Karate Dragon Award, for his humanitarian work with disadvantaged and disabled children.
• Founder of FASST (Focus Action Skill Strategy & Tactics) an amalgamated martial art system that is multi-dimensional in its application as it is a problem solving technology in terms of neutralizing a physical threat as well as can be employed to promote financially sustainable solutions that can fundamentally change individuals & society (i.e. enlightening and motivating victims of aggression or substance abuse how to end the cycle of dysfunction, etc.).
• May 2006, nominee and ordained disciple of China Songshan Shaolin Temple – given the name Shi Chang Gui
Through his extensive travels throughout the orient, Mr. Dux studied and held minimum title and rank of instructor or higher, in over twenty-two traditional indigenous martial art systems, world-wide. Bestowed upon him is the title: GRANDMASTER: HANSHI; Rank of: JO-dan (10th degree of 10 degrees of professional expertise) as granted to him by governing bodies Shinjimatsu, Yokohama Japan and Head of Family Sokeship Council as well as various other professional martial organizations for which he served as a regulating Board/Council Member by which to promote or demote the rank and title of subordinates and peers, pertaining to authenticity of martial skill sets, spirit and academia foreign to his own system – Dux Ryu.
Frank Dux last world record appearance occurred in, April1993, when after a thirteen year hiatus and retirement, with an estimated 40,000 spectators and millions watching the telecast Frank Dux became the first and only human being to punch through bullet proof glass at the International Martial Arts Festival, held at Bercy Stadium, Paris, France, authenticated by Bushido magazine. Upon breaking the glass, its bent steel frame was put on display and broken pieces were distributed to members of the press to confirm its authenticity.
Perception Management:
Eight years after his retirement and appearance in Black Belt magazine, Nov. 1980, as Full-Contact Kumite Champion Frank Dux reputation was without incident, his veracity went unquestioned. The emergence of Iran Contra scandal coincides with attacks made on Dux as both a world champion and as covert operative, someone capable of providing valuable testimony in the wake of Congressional Hearings underway at the time. These attacks eventually prompted Frank Dux to have identified the source of this controversy as Los Angeles Times reporter, John Johnson, in his book The Secret Man, HarperCollins 1996. Dux eventually sued in Los Angeles Superior Court, Larry Bailey, Alexander McColl and Robert K. Brown of Soldier of Fortune magazine, over libelous and slanderous remarks made by John Johnson and repeated by them to diminish Dux character in order to financially benefit.
In 1996, Frank Dux was Robert K. Brown’s business competitor with their film projects competing to be green-lighted by movie mogul, Jerry Bruckheimer. Dux references in his complaint, creating controversy by challenging Dux bona fides was not an isolated act with the magazine owned and operated by Robert K. Brown, who also used this same tactic in diminishing the character and bona fides of the founder of US Navy SEAL anti-terror unit, Richard Marcinko. Marcinko is also a competitor of Brown regarding Bruckheimer. Dux alleged Brown and his magazine were guilty of publishing unbalanced inflammatory articles by referring to the decorated war veteran Marcinko as “Pouge Warrior” and Dux as, “Full Mental Jacket,” said name calling is indicative of malice and also indicated a hidden agenda was being served, for which Dux based his litigation.
Another theory originating the cause of the baseless controversy, is speculated to be attributed to Frank Dux book exposing embarrassing improprieties committed by the executive branch of US government, chiefly, the CIA and FBI (which included their past wrongdoings of interfering in the American political process, thusly, undermining a democratic system of government they, ironically, are sworn to protect) Dux “whistle-blowing” meant being subjected to orchestrated campaigns of “Perception Management” – a labyrinth of postures, responses and images constructed out of half-truths and lies - cover-ups.
Dux candidly address the practice of misinformation and character assassination in his book, The Secret Man. Elaborating upon how this was done to Dux (pg 65-66) as a pre-emptive strike in anticipation of Dux giving testimony before Congress regarding violations of the Boland and Logan amendments. A potential “whistle-blower” Dux was slandered and libeled by an alleged, CIA paid journalist, Los Angeles Times reporter, John Johnson, in May1998.
John Johnson’s writing style is intentionally deceptive, unbalanced and couched to invoke Times v Sullivan, the case law decision that enables the telling and retelling of inflammatory falsehoods without repercussion with the staged appearance of absence of malice. Times vs. Sullivan is a well established legal loophole shielding tabloid journalists and the propaganda arms of both the government and special interest groups, historically, proven highly capable in fabricating or orchestrating facts to render any conclusion in accordance to their “sources.”
Dux alleges in his book John Johnson is guilty of intentional omitting rebuttal evidence or testimony of eyewitness accounts that challenged his slant; propping up as his expert witnesses Dux business competitors or personal nemesis; juxtaposing statements to render an entirely different meaning as well as Johnson presenting incredulous evidence, as credible. Beginning with Johnson referencing a trophy receipt John Johnson alleges proves Dux invented his Kumite World Championship.
Examination of John Johnson’s trophy receipt (xerox document) in Los Angeles Superior Court, Dux v. Van Damme, was determined to be “on its face” fraudulent. Misspelling of Dux name as “Dukes”, meant the Trophy faceplate would have been engraved D-U-K-E-S, which it is not. In addition, the Trophy in Johnson’s receipt is three tiered with a Judo figure on top as its crown contrary to the Trophy Dux possesses, which is a 3 foot pedestal with a Silver Cup, on top. . The receipt is also dated several years after Dux Trophy was photographed in 1976, and which appears with Dux holding it in Black Belt magazine, Nov. 1980 issue, and which Johnson refers to in his article. Johnson by his own admission had the source to validate or disprove the authenticity of the receipt Johnson deceptively employs to create controversy.
Dux alleges in his book Johnson is serving a hidden agenda. John Johnson’s venomous tone resorting to name calling in interviewing eyewitnesses, became so outlandish, according to Dux, that it prompted Dux attorney, Michael Lucero, and Dux to call upon the editorial offices of the Los Angeles Times, prior to the articles publication.
Dux further states, he and his attorney had gone to editorial offices with the expectation of being able to confront John Johnson in front of his editor, with Dux presenting irrefutable third party evidence of his own (that would have killed the story). Dux relates in his book he was taken back when the LA times editor refused to review that evidence, such as video-taped footage transferred from 8mm and 16mm film of his championship Kumite fights, military service records in which he is designated and released from active duty as a Intelligence Specialist contradicting his being a “communicator” as Johnson alleges in his article.
According to Dux book John Johnson’s editor felt compelled to take Dux aside and whisper “North” was behind the lies as well as confide in Dux “as an employee” he sadly could do nothing but go along with them, with the editor burying the false and inflammatory words of John Johnson in the San Fernando Valley Metro section, as an editorial. Resurfacing through Soldier of Fortune magazine, co-incidentally, at a time when, potentially, Dux may testify this time in the alleged CIA drug trafficking case of Freeway Ricky Ross.
NSC staffer and Iran Contra spy master, Lt. Colonel, Oliver North, who was implicated by the Los Angeles Times editor as orchestrating the controversy generated by John Johnson, ended up testifying before Congress and, eventually, was convicted of a felony for taking part in a cover up. Whether “North” was behind the campaign is speculative.
Popular theories abound that allege John Johnson’s outlandish behavior and “pushing Dux buttons” is indicative of a divide and conquer strategy. One intended to stir a back-lash reaction from Dux against North whom, in reality is not guilty of any mudslinging pre-emptive strike as to hinder Dux appearance before Congress by Johnson’s article diminishing him as a credible witness, capable of impeaching North’s testimony.
Congressional witness, Iran Contra paymaster, Lt. Commander Alexander Martin, USN, identifying Dux under oath as a covert operative and in a declaration in support of Dux v Robert K Brown, Alexander McColl, Larry Baily and Soldier Of Fortune Magazine, Case No: BC198883, Superior Court of California, Los Angeles County, stated he is familiar with Dux book, he read it and believes it to be true.
Examination of Dux v Robert K Brown, Alexander McColl, Larry Baily and Soldier Of Fortune Magazine, Case No: BC198883, Superior Court of California, Los Angeles County, reveals in order to claim libel and slander Dux had to prove the allegations being made about him were false. Thus the defendants cannot and do not rely upon the truth as their defense. Instead, they invoke Times v Sullivan and allege they should have a right to say whatever they wish about Frank Dux because he is a public figure.
Court records reveal the defendants were released from liability when defendants are able to argue they had a reasonable expectation to rely upon Frank Dux Military Service Record Book as being truthful, in spite of the counter-argument Frank Dux in his book warns his military records had been altered, entries forged and is sanitized to paint him in a bad light, a common practice inflicted upon government “whistle-blowers,” like Dux.
In addition, defendants in Dux v Robert K Brown, Alexander McColl, Larry Baily and Soldier Of Fortune Magazine, Case No: BC198883, Superior Court of California, Los Angeles County, were deferring blame to Stolen Valor by B.G. Burkett, a self-published vanity press – printed and distributed without a team of skilled professionals challenging the claims, allegations and the evidence that supports them, first.
In contrast to Dux book The Secret Man having been vetted by the prestigious law firm of Slade and MetCalf - highly respected and well experienced at conducting methodical due diligence, a prerequisite before Dux book would be published by HarperCollins/Regan Books.
A Legal Analysis And Breakdown of Stolen Valor in the Dux v Robert K Brown, Alexander McColl, Larry Baily and Soldier Of Fortune Magazine, Case No: BC198883, Superior Court of California, Los Angeles County establishes B.G. Burkett makes over 600 overtly inflammatory and unsubstantiated false allegations, and is predisposed to repeating John Johnson’s false claims.
The most disturbing and false allegation is Burkett describing Dux was passing himself off as a Vietnam Veteran and collecting money for it as part of phony vet speakers tour. To support the allegation Burkett presents a photograph of Dux taken of him in a Marine uniform adorned with Army ribbons. Soldier of Fortune magazine as well as Burkett present the photo deceptively out of context; as the photo was actually snapped of Dux by his ex-wife (then his girlfriend) on his way to his college film class wrap party. Dux wearing the costume he wore in his student film, joining his other classmates in their costume uniform and who provide testimony to this, under penalty of perjury [www.duxryu.8m.com].
Another chief source of controversy stems from ill informed bloggers citing and repeating the false testimony of an unemployed musician, Richard Alexander. In Dux v. Van Damme, Van Damme’s attorney Martin Singer presented Richard Alexander as a rebuttal witness in an effort to undermine Dux credibility. Alexander represented under oath he was Dux friend for 20 years and that he had created the frame and bullet proof glass, as a stage illusion. Cross examination reveals Richard Alexander real identity is Richard Alexander Shimer and his familiarity with Dux was only limited to Dux knowing Alexander’s brother Joseph Shimer as his student, who had asked Dux “as a friend” to please help his brother Richard Alexander Shimer, a released felon, convicted for trafficking narcotics.
Dux attorney Michael Kramer proved the bullet proof glass and frame is in actuality supplied not by a musician, Richard Alexander, but instead, by Jose Bermudez, a professional custom fabricator. Unlike Alexander, Jose Bermudez testimony held up under cross examination, declaring under penalty of perjury that he was present for the video taping of when the authenticity of the bullet proof glass was tested, being shot by a 9mm pistol. Emphatically, stressing Richard Alexander AKA Richard Alexander Shimer could not be there as he falsely alleged because the lack of space made it impossible to put anyone else other than Bermudez and shooter in the gun booth.. Several other witnesses were called that establish after striking the glass as well as breaking bottles Shimer falsely claimed were candy glass, Dux had to be medically treated with shards of glass having to be removed from his foot and hands by the on site event doctor. Eyewitness Steven Williams, a medical report as well as close up on Dux foot with glass visibly in it and that appears in after market video of the Bercy event, submitted into evidence in Dux v. Van Damme, establish the feats authenticity and further impeaches Richard Alexander AKA Richard Alexander Shimer.
Kramer also exposed Richard Alexander AKA Richard Alexander Shimer false testimony served a personal agenda as he was in jeopardy of criminal prosecution, with his unsuccessful attempting to purchase Dux collectible car, 1956 T-Bird, while simultaneously filing a theft report and insurance claim (at an inflated valuation by stating it was a “Super-charged T-Bird,”). Submitted into evidence was declaration of Insurance Investigator Michael Moen who substantiates such a claim and fraud attempt was carried out by Richard Alexander AKA Richard Alexander Shimer.
Richard Alexander AKA Richard Alexander Shimer, the source of false claims that Frank Dux staged his world record break as well as whom internet sites refer to as his longtime friend, whose testimony is responsible for Dux losing his court case with Van Damme, is presently in custody at Gowanda Correctional Facility. Convicted for substance abuse and trafficking of narcotics. “ENTER THE KUMITE aka QUEST” (Film)
In 1991, unable to repeat the success of Bloodsport Jean Claude Van Damme re-united and partnered with Dux, who wrote the script entitled “Enter The Kumite”, designed to revisit the story Bloodsport and this time with a bigger budget. Van Damme would again play the lead. The filming was cancelled due to original production company’s insolvency and the project was put on hold.
In 1994, Dux lapsed into a coma as a result of complications from brain surgery, saddled with tumors from his days of fighting. Van Damme then resurrected and reworked the script into The Quest, creating the legal basis and means to deny Dux his promised gross profit participation. Upon, recovery from his life threatening illness Dux successfully filed a complaint with the Writers Guild of America and was awarded both a writing credit and $50,000[1].
Thereupon, Dux was forced to file suit against Jean Claude Van Damme for breach of oral contract but ultimately lost the suit in court due to Hollywood trade magazine Point Of View that raised an eyebrow at how the trial was run. POV’s Jennie and Terrie Frankel write, “The judge karate kicked Dux below the belt with a series of unprecedented rulings that precluded the testimony of any rebuttal witnesses, any impeachment witnesses and all actual eyewitnesses to the deal. Kramer (Dux’s attorney) argued these witnesses were critical to his case, but to no avail.” Van Damme’s witnesses were also allowed to hear each other’s testimony while Dux witnesses were sequestered and their testimony was limited by the judge. [http://martialarts.jameshom.com/library/weekly/aa073001c.htm]
Key witness, Attorney Michael B. Frankle scope of testimony was restricted and censured by the Judge Kado who instructed Frankle he could not testify to the fact Frankle negotiated the gross participation structure with Van Damme, directly, Van Damme acting as the film’s producer. At trial, Van Damme claimed under oath he was not the producer and denied making any such representation. This was shown not to be the case. Credits establish Van Damme is the producer whereby, he negotiated Roger Moores contract, as well.
The unbalanced trial resulted in Court TV doing a 1 hour special in which Jurors state, on camera, given the judges instructions given them meant that it didn’t matter whether they believed Dux or not they could only base their decision on the evidence which, the judge did not permit into evidence, thereby, pre-determining the outcome in Van Damme’s favor.

Hi Frank
I won’t delete my original article, but I’ll certainly let you have your say, which I’ve published fully and unedited as per your comment.
I’ve checked out your official site and MySpace page and there’s enough personal photos on there to make me think that if you’re not actually Frank Dux yourself, you’re his biggest fan. Hence, I’ll take you at face value until forced to eat humble pie.
To be honest I’m not sure John Steven’s account differs so far from my own. Less whimsical, perhaps.
Incidentally, I tried to Google the article in question and the only source appears to be your MySpace page. Do you have the original link? Be great if you could post it. And who is John Stevens? Not this one, is it? It’s quite a common name and Google returns a depressing 234,000 pages. It would be nice to see the article where it was originally published.
As said, I’ve no problems with you having your say. All power to you. However, while you naturally have a right to ‘your side’ of the story, I haven’t seen anything in the way of hard and fast evidence to make me retract my original post.
However, you may want to submit your comments to the authors of the websites mention above (Bullshido and ChasingTheFrog.com) as I’m sure they’d be very interested to hear from you. Who knows - it might work out after all!
Oh, just so you know - I haven’t made a single cent from this page.
Thanks for your thoughts,
Sheamus
Interesting. Especially his follow-up. Or, rather, the information provided by “award winning investigative journalist” John Stevens of International News Service. Well, here’s your answer as to who *he* is:
http://www.publications.ojd.state.or.us/S46805.htm
[snip]The following facts are supported by clear and convincing evidence. In 1989, the accused represented Hickey, who bought and sold animals for medical research, in proceedings before the United States Department of Agriculture. Hickey’s business had been targeted by animal rights activists, and Hickey felt that he was in some personal danger. The accused introduced Hickey to Stevens, a private investigator, who initially was hired to provide security for Hickey and his wife at an October 31, 1989, hearing.
After the hearing, Settlemier, who owned a farm that was directly adjacent to Hickey’s business, spoke to television news reporters, and her statements later were televised. Hickey and the accused knew Settlemier, and knew that she strongly opposed Hickey’s business. Hickey and the accused believed that Settlemier was permitting animal rights activists to use her property as a base of operations for observing and “raiding” Hickey’s facilities.
The correct characterization of the decisional process that led to the next step is a matter of considerable dispute. It is undisputed, however, that, on November 7, 1989, Stevens, the private investigator, telephoned Settlemier, introduced himself as a reporter for International News Service, and asked if Settlemier would answer some questions about Hickey’s animal research supply business. Stevens’ statement that he worked for International News Service technically was true: International News Service was the assumed business name that Stevens used when he worked as a freelance news reporter — a sideline to his private investigating business. It is clear, however, that Stevens was acting as a private investigator, not as a news reporter, when he interviewed Settlemier. [snip]
Also, “award winning investigative journalists” usually gets famous names correct. I don’t know who Eugene Hausenfaus is, but I’m pretty certain he is not the person who was captured and held in Nicaragua as a CIA operative in the ’80s–that person would be Eugene Hasenfus.
That was fun. I should go back to work now.
If the best one can do is take petty swipes at Stevens who is apparently also a licensed private investigator (skilled at unveiling the truth) and free lance reporter or thus myself all because of a name typo and then seemingly overlook and cast aside the plethora of sources being provided and quoted, it is apparent it is not truth one may seek but the fodder by which to feed an obviously insatiable ego. Why else hide behind a pseudonym? R? Why not address this in the open using your real identity or will it reveal you have a hidden agenda, conflict of interest? Etc.
I wish to thank Sheamus for at least providing me the opportunity to be heard unlike what I experienced when i attempted to post my comments in response to the slander and libel being repeated and touted on Bullshido.com as some kind of credible source by people hiding behind pseudonyms like M.C. Busman to escape being held civil and possibly criminally accountable and confronted by me or anyone who knows the truth and circumstances why such a campaign of Perception Management/Disinformation was started and continues.
Frank, since you posted here your official site has been removed and replaced with just an email link (to you). Why is that?
This is news to me, I’ll have to look into this.
Heh… This is fun. Bloodsport came on TV just now and I hadn’t watched it since high school. So I decided to start digging about as well. Wow, it seems to get silly fast. Great post Mr. Sheamus. Yea, no website is up… Maybe the C.I.A. is rerouting it
Decided to look up some stuff after seeing the movie again tonight. Still love the crappy dialogue & awesome fights 10 years after last watching it, but I had no idea about all the controversy! The following is all based entirely on review of stuff Mr. Dux posted here and on his own MySpace page.
According to the “Tucson Citizen” article Mr. Dux posted on his MySpace page (date June 3, 1996), he was 39 at the time he was there recovering from his brain tumors. That means he was born around 1957 and is about 51 today. It also means he was 18 in 1975, when he claims to have won the Kumite.
He also posted a USMC boot camp “graduation day” photo from San Diego, dated 1975, which is consistent with his enlisting at age 18, possibly right out of high school. Marine Corps boot camp then and now takes about 3 months. He also posts a B&W photo that shows him “in 1975 when [he] won the Kumite as depicted in Bloodsport,” that same year. The photo shows a regular gymnasium, much like those used for USMC unarmed combat or after-school karate classes.
Mr. Dux must have competed in the “secret” competition at the CIA’s behest earlier in the year prior to enlisting. OR this new E-2 Marine Reservist (w/no leave accrued) went AWOL to compete, as depicted in the movie. ORRR an 18-year-old kid with no degree and no other training actually managed to get recruited by the CIA, prove his martial arts prowess to clandestine operatives, get invited to compete in and win the Kumite all within less than a year. Impressive. Or it never happened.
If Mr. Dux is a legitimate veteran who served at all, he should have an original copy of his discharge paperwork, which he would have reviewed and signed upon leaving the service. If not, he can request one from the Veteran’s Administration. If it has been tampered with in some way, as he claims, the original should prove his claims. If he lost it, well…his fault.
He posts nothing to account for 1975-1980, the key timeframe in question, except that he was the Kumite champion (for the 1-time competition that happens every 5 years, right?). He mentions going to college at some point (the photo w/uniform inconsistencies was from a college “film class wrap party” or Halloween party, no?) He does not say where or when he attended, or if he graduated. Film class, eh?
Additional photos depict Mr. Dux “operating” in the Philippines through the 1970s and 1980s and in 1983 (age 26); standing on China’s Great Wall in the 1980s (same moustache as the Philippines photos); and others show his “first school” and “first formal class of students” in 1980. Another shows him and his students participating in the LA Nisei Matsuri in Aug, 1983. Obviously he was in CA for at least a good chunk of the early 1980s, if not there for college from 1975 on. Bloodsport came out a short 4 years later. In the meantime, Mr. Dux earned various film credits while working in Hollywood (see IMDB).
The “article” above alleges slander, libel and fraud against Mr. Dux attempting to discredit him for his role in the Iran-Contra affair, which only came to light in 1986 (ruining daytime network TV for millions of U.S. children for months…) Five years earlier, Iran-Contra offered weapons in exchange for buying the freedom of U.S. hostages held by radical students at the U.S. embassy in Tehran for 444 days from 1979-1981. That window falls on either side of Mr. Dux opening and operating a private business under his own name in Southern California. He provides his own evidence showing that he was there at the time, not traipsing around Central America, engaging in any on-going training, or concerned about concealing his identity as a covert operative.
He now uses his vast experience, intelligence background and “Mission Impossible” skill set to sell cheap spy cameras online.
Also, his daughter is SMOKING hot! Good job on that, sir.
The first clue that something was amiss? “Dim Mak” is in NO way a Japanese term… It’s probably Cantonese. Still, Bloodsport remains a fun, slightly crappy movie that inspired kids everywhere to beat each other up and get interested in martial arts. For that, I suppose we should still be grateful.
Yes, irrespective of whatever is right or wrong, truth or lies in all of this, Bloodsport remains a classic piece of trashy-but-great cinema!
Thanks for your comments,
Sheamus
My heart goes out to any person that plays god. Functions out of ego. Made evident by way of mean spirited conjecture. The observable fact is they think they are presenting themselves as credible and capable of discerning the truth. Achieved through what they consider to be deductive reasoning. Sadly, in actuality they expose a flawed character indicative of deep inner emotional turmoil. I only wish for them to find peace within themselves and not look outside themselves by way of degrading others to feel superior or equal or adequate.
First and foremost, for the record did I ever state I was a card carrying agent who worked for the CIA? The answer to this is clearly evident to anyone who actually read my book NOT just the cover. Nor made the unfortunate mistake of listening to second hand information and then repeat those erroneous ramblings. Only to discover to their embarrassment such misrepresentations were fabricated by the very kind of people they despise and who serve a hidden agenda.
For instance, let me begin by educating some readers. Anyone doing any “wet work,” particularly, when it came to Nicaraguan Contras had to be covert (as in off the books) due to the fact if compromised the Reagan Administration would be held accountable, in violation of the Logan and Boland Amendments. The Iran Contra hearings and extensive investigation establish this to be historical fact, along with its key players, like covert operative paymaster, Lt. Commander, Alexander Martin (USN). Lt. Commander Martin as well as numerous government documents identify me and my activities as covert agent. This is factual substantive evidence being presented under penalty of perjury subjected to examination and independent expert verification. A bit more credible than theorizing, don’t you agree?
I have not been singled-out in being treated unfairly. Did you know 5,000 combat troops were subjected to the same kind of poo pooing, with their integrity questioned because they too were given the task of fighting for their country in secret, and if not for one brave statesman from California, rep. Dornan, to lead the charge the Pentagon would never have come forward to finally admit the actual truth (after 5 years of denial) and righteously grant these brave men and women the benefits they as combatants were entitled to and yet were denied by the establishment that everyone is so quick to appease! Deffer rather than verify!
C’mon folks take the blinders off! Freedom isn’t free and to protect it it starts here at home by honoring the dead and wounded with the truth! This is not a partisan issue! Our veterans deserve better than lip service. And i’m not saying look at me I am hero, either. To the contrary, I’m just trying to be a voice of reason.
For me, being truly patriotic starts by my speaking out and protecting the ideals and bill of rights that defines us like no other nation “under god, indivisible with liberty and justice FOR ALL!”
I made many enemies in executing my duties because I have held true to my principles, beginning with love of my country and its ideals - what it really is supposed to stand for, first and foremost. Not going along with the status quo or letting an overt wrong go unpunished. I was classified what they call a “whistle blower” and have been subjected to the harassment and loss of opportunity. I recognized long ago my actions meant my being subjected to undeserved criticism, so what ever is said about me is inconsequential to me, emotionally.
If you want a better idea of how things are really done in the intelligence community, opposed to how people think it is, I suggest you view the DVD’s Munich or Spy Game (pay attention to Brad Pitt Character who is not CIA but is, off handedly, at the same time. FYI- the test of getting into the apartment is a real one generally given to help determine operators from those better suited to being analysts - the trick was first used by the Mossad / Israeli intelligence).
I spent the majority of my adult life taking measures aimed at readily concealing my activities which weren’t by the way gathering intelligence on foreign governments or killing terrorists but rather bringing to justice if not containing the illicit activities of US and allied intelligence assets and operatives working under the color of authority. Unfortunately, several undeservedly posses the specter of respectability of government title or military rank by which to influence others, still today.
I was 19 not 18 when I enlisted in the Marine Corps, April 1975, my ORIGINAL DD 214 Duty Discharge papers and military service records (before their being sanitized not as part of some cover up but to conceal my identity to protect me) have been verified by document experts. These documents identify me as an Intelligence Specialist, which I presented to broadcast journalists and their independent experts, in the past.
Some of these experts upon meeting them I confided in. Given their pre-existing activities they were able to contact and verify my covert activities and training with some of the very people they personally operated with in the past and who also, coincidentally, operated with me, as well, under assumed identities.
This was the case with Shadow Broadcasting Radio expert, Captain Eiman, in 1996 broadcast. Captain Eiman is a highly decorated Vietnam war veteran, a Green Beret, who describes his investigation and verification of me and my representations in my book as fact to listeners.
Therefore, it stands to reason unless I was forthcoming with specific verifiable information I have kept to myself surrounding my activities why would anyone unless they were operating in the same inner circles, as everything is compartmentalized, think they have any hope of discover of anything I or any operator for that matter was doing back then. It is asinine to pretend to be able to track the comings and goings of an intelligence agent by way of photographs on myspace profile… In addition to the fact establishing alibi’s is SOP in the intelligence community.
And yes, I operated a MA school,in the 1980’s, and to answer the innuendo that comes with how could I operate as an intelligence operative when I was doing this? Well, did anyone also take into consideration I also operated several martial art schools at that same time, DAH! Done simultaneously, Dah! According to the assumption going on I couldn’t really operate more than one school at a time, now could I? Indeed, how could I be in two places at the same time - I couldn’t, therefore, gee, you think I had instructors and staff around to run the schools when I wasn’t there? ya think? Of course I did!
Likewise, in 1996, I was shocked at just how amateurish and vain the attempt was made by SOF magazine who called me up and expected me to share my confidential info with them, complete strangers, over the telephone and on speaker! DAH!
All anyone in my position could do is play Colombo with them and hope that the interviewer, Alexander McColl, if he was truly really an operator picked up on some signals, like key identity phrases sorta like what the Mason’s do to identify each other. But alas that was not to be the case. One could rightfully accuse SOF (which established for itself the reputation of being a cut out for the CIA propaganda/psych warfare arm), of only calling me with the childish intent of finding out just how extensive my covert activities were in relation to paramilitary “CIA cut outs” that my book The Secret Man, HarperCollins, 1996, exposes as war criminals.
Mind one. These are CIA assets that the SOF staff and writer personally knew and supported with money (and guns?) and whom, coincidentally, these individuals led death squads and are charged with having committed WAR CRIMES! Tortured the innocent. Murdered in mass, men, women and CHILDREN!
Why is no one focusing on that injustice or the fact that my accusers and detractors seem to be so fond of quoting also share in common the UGLY fact that they are outspoken members of a fascist organization, called WACL- a reputed affiliate of the Ku Klux Klan, Bulgarian National Front (Nazi party), Korean fascists, etc. that operate and profit in secret. That stand accused of having used this relationship to have made themselves rich from trafficking drugs and arms. Merchants of misery and death, while wrapping themselves in their countries respective flag to conceal their true loyalty, to themselves, to each other and to hate their groups. Don’t you think it is time to level the playing field by acknowledging the truth for what it is and recognize when people are being manipulated and by whom, which isn’t me.
I try to stay on task despite the roadblocks and innuendo thrown my way and help inspire others to better themselves and remind them the reason people like me, do what we do, is because we come from a place of peacefulness; we dedicate our lives as martial artists to try to turn people away from anger and replace it with understanding. So why is any one finding fault in that is beyond me, unless it is because they are in desperate need of understanding or acknowledgment for themselves. And for that they have my deepest sympathy and extend myself to them with concern and in friendship, not anger.
Reading this makes me very, very sad all over again.
I was attending basic training in the US Army, in order to actually earn a military intelligence MOS, when one day in 1989 or 1990 my mother calls me crying on the phone, stating that she was being sued by Mr. Frank Dux. The reason? Because I stopped attending his “dojo” in North Hollywood and did not pay the dues for the “Purple Belt Program”. I remember a very nice membership card, with the silouette of Sho Kosugi doing a flying side kick with a ninja to.
After my young and impressionable self realized that Mr. Dux was not the person he said he was, I stopped attending, and my mother stopped paying, violating the contractual agreement. I think he sued my mother for about $ 1,500. Luckily, my mother showed up to court, but Frank did not, and the case was dismissed.
I remember when Mr. Dux showed us a set of beautifully drawn ninja figures. A very impressive one, was of a shinobi lifting a cap from his head, while hundreds of bugs spilled out of the cover. Then, Mr. Dux tried to explain to us, how Ninjutsu really was started in Israel, and explained to us the six basic movements of offense and defense, and how they coincided with the Star of David.
A few days later, his North Hollywood “dojo” was broken into, some of his martial art weaponry stolen, and a frantic Mr. Dux explained to us, his students, how an Iga Team broke into the “dojo” and planted listening devices. But life is weird that way.
I was a very naive kid, and at the age of 15, I would take the bus from Hollywood, and spend about two hours in order to attend Dux Ninjitsu (yes, ninjitsu, not ninjutsu) in North Hollywood. I do not recall the exact address (I think it was on Colfax Avenue at the time), but I remember that I used to spend 4 hours in the bus in order to attend his “ninja” training three times a week. (Validating point for Frank: I used to practice and go to school with a girl by the name of Stacy RichiXXX and her brother, whatever his name was). I know Frank remembers the classes he used to give, like going to the parking lot, and practice shuriken throwing. I was very impressed at how he could bounce a screwdriver on the ground and almost always catch it.
One of the most interesting things I remember, was when he was selling some blade, wrapped in parachute cord, that was allegedly dipped in his “masters” ashes. It looked like a very nice blade, but it was expensive. A very nice photograph and a bio of his exploits in “Honduras” or some other country in Central America was part of the marketing scheme.
The reason I am writing this in this here blog, is to show that other people pay for the lies, hoaxes and misrepresentations stated by people who want to make a buck.
In order for Frank to make some money, he represented himself as one thing. Like a modern day snake oil salesman, preying on the naivette of 15 year olds who sacrificed themselves to live the lie and line his pockets with graft.
In order for Frank to take my mother’s hard earned money, he had to lie to the world, and pretend to be something he is not. Was he teaching martial arts? Yes. He probably knows tae-kwon-do or some other conventional form. But that is not sexy enough. Being a ninja, who was a counterintelligence agent for the army (that is what he was claiming to us at the time), who operated somewhere in Central America, and was selling his master’s ashes on a blade, made his persona more profitable.
The very last thing that made me very very very sad, was when I accidentally got invited to his wedding in the early 90s. I think he was marrying some girl named Monica or Claudia, some beautiful latina model.
I remember having a little conversation with her in Spanish, in which I asked her: “You seem like a very intelligent girl. Why in the world are you marrying Frank?”
She looks down at the table and says: “I don’t know. I think his connections in Hollywood can help my modeling career”.
I passed by the “body guards” he had stationed at his wedding, waited for Frank and that girl to leave the party in a black convertible, and that was the last I ever saw of Frank. Frank, you know I am telling the truth, because the ring photos were ruined. Remember?
I truly hope that he is happy wherever he is. I hope he is getting the therapy he needs, and I wish only happiness and health to that poor man.
Maybe now, since I was trained by Mr. Dux, have an actual career in MI, fought in Iraq and Afghanistan, conducted missions in Panama and Nicaragua, fought the war on terror and operated at the US-Mexico border, I can come up with a cool fighting style, market a system, and make a couple of bucks. I mean, I have lots of military equipment for a cool photo op, and the stuff I do not have, I can borrow from my friends. I think I will get an Armani tailored to my overweight body and look cool in the back of the book I will write, about how my THT helped TF 80 or 120 catch Saddam Hussein in OIF I (Frank, you can google THT and TF 80 or 120 for your edification).
Stay tuned,
John Ronin (HUMINT)
Interesting.
I never thought that such contreversy existed.
I don’t have the time to do my own research as I am busy,as you can see from my website. However,as a person that knows current and retired military and who loves to read about military and spec ops,it makes sense to me that Mr Dux is not revealing everything about his past.Lets not forget that althought the government may want to portray him as a lier and such,Mr Dux is required to not talk or explain anything about his covert activities, simply because they are classified.
At least that is my understanding.
LOL Auguste,
But Frank can write an autobiography and disclose operation names, missions, locations, and do all of this for a profit?
LOL.
First of all, any and all operatives have to sign a non disclosure agreement (SF 312) http://contacts.gsa.gov/webforms.nsf/0/03A78F16A522716785256A69004E23F6/file/SF312.pdf This is done by everybody, covert, overt, white ops, black ops, military or civilian, actual govt. employee or recruited asset, etc. If Mr. Dux actually conducted all these missions and operations, he would not be able to disclose any of it would violate the non disclosure agreement and violate all sort of federal laws.
If what was written in his book was the truth, he had to go through a panel that would redact (censor) all information that is classified. But since it is a work of fiction, the military and the civilian intelligence agencies did not have to censor anything.
Secret material usually is classified for at least 25 years. The downgrading procedure is a nightmare and it is not done in order for somebody to be able to write a book (unless the book is classified, and then who cares, there is no downgrading).
You can imagine how long it takes for Top Secret material to be downgraded.
Anyway, inshallah, Mr. Dux is happy and healthy, and that is all I wish for him.
Masallamah,
John Ronin.
Sometimes, I have to shake my head in disbelief. Valerie Plains credentials and book, is that fraudulent, too? Along with Frank Snepp’s book” Along with any number of former documented intelligence officers and operators, like Lt. Commander, Dick Marcinko, USN, founder of the US Navy SEAL team six, the elite and top secret SEAL anti-terror unit, whose activities he elaborates upon in his book Rogue Warrior (just to name a few). Intelligence agents who like myself have written books for profit (as if that makes us unpatriotic, is that it?). Autobiographies, by the way released in brazenly print, shortly, after retirement. Also, prompting official public denials because fiction is never in need of denial. Twenty-five years to wait to say anything?
Let us call this for what it really is, a veiled attempt at Perception Management, a labyrinth of deception, a fabrication composed by Ronin out of half truths and lies . Reality is, given these aforementioned examples, how is it possible Ronin is out promoting a common fallacy, as reality. Perhaps because he is nothing more than a poser continuing to intentionally if not, erroneously, mislead others astray out of his demonstrative ignorance.
Does anyone recall how on a network news show former acting ambassador to Iraq Joseph Wilson says that the outing of his wife and other attempts to discredit him “are clearly intended to intimidate others from coming forward.” But it’s not just intimidation; it’s a felony. Until now, a crime the Bush family had taken very seriously.
Many believe the law was passed in direct response to former CIA agent Philip Agee’s blowing the whistle on CIA dirty tricks in his book Inside the Company: CIA Diary. George H.W. Bush, who was vice-president when the law was passed (and by the way ran his own covert version of the CIA through the NSC, which became Iran Contra-gate, who stands accused he lobbied for that law in order to further conceal the skirting of Congressional oversight which I took part in, in violation of the Boland and Logan Amendments), said some of the criticism of the Agency ruined secret U.S. clandestine operations in foreign countries.
So seriously did the Bushes take the crime of exposing CIA operatives and covert operations that Barbara Bush, in her memoirs, accused Agee of blowing the cover of the CIA Station Chief in Greece, Richard Welch, who was assassinated outside his Athens residence in 1975. Agee sued the former first lady and Mrs. Bush withdrew the statement from additional printings of her book. Still, at a celebration marking the fiftieth anniversary of the CIA, the elder Bush again singled out Agee in his remarks, calling him “a traitor to our country.”
Many believe the Intelligence Identities Protection Act was passed in direct response to Agee’s blowing the whistle on CIA dirty tricks but with Iran Contra others suggest it was only enacted to make sure those dirty little secrets like war crimes remain a secret and, herein, lies the paradox because to not speak out as I have done so, is considered a crime also, taking into account how the Nurenburg War Crimes Tribunals set precedents for the whole world to follow. Like, banning torture, indiscriminate detainment of individuals without due process and mass murder - as in those Latin American death squads I spoke out against in my book. Coincidentally, whose leadership is supported publicly and financially by CIA cut outs, like SOF magazine, and paramilitary intelligence types (like Ronin self professes to be). Those who threatened me from afar to sue me for libel but it turns out it was I who sued for libel and slander, in the end.
My book is not about promoting myself as Ronin unjustly suggests and would like to mislead others into believing and for what purpose? I took a chance in exposing how I bared witness to and unveiled covert agents working under the color of authority to enrich themselves through criminal behavior. Acts being carried out all the while by individuals wrapping themselves in the flag and tugging at our heart strings by spouting patriotic rhetoric. For all I know, Ronin, is an alias being used by one of these criminals, still in uniform, or just another whacko who lashes out because they feel empowered through their attempt to draw me out to engage with them, directly, which I have no reason to do. Pointing people back to the truth is a valid reason not to remain silent, however.
Unfortunately, with celebrity comes the occasional whacko’s who will wildly claim almost anything. One consolation, sometimes their actions provides me the opportunity to promote my book, even though it is not in print nor will I be able to financially benefit by this. My satisfaction is derived when upon reading it, it brings about change in others and their ability to act and become politically engaged rather than remain apathetically disengaged, because they are armed with the truth.
Unlike John Ronin I can readily prove I studied under Frank Dux, and for over 25 years. To do this, one can go to the black belt registry at http://www.duxryu.8m.com.
However, for argument sake if we are all to take Ronin’s word for it at face value, it is safe to assume I would have been in Ronin’s Dux Ryu Ninjitsu class, that is, if he actually really attended the North Hollywood School. My suspicions are raised since he cannot remotely guess as to where the school is located, that is, within a reasonable distance by way of erroneously providing the name of a North/South bound street when the studio was on a West/Eastbound street, located, several miles away. But let us not nit pick.
I began to write this on father’s day wishing to honor the second father in my life, Frank Dux. My recollection and experience contradicts the image Jon Ronin would have others believe is Frank Dux. Ronin’s mischaracterizations and misrepresentations serve to expose Ronin’s dishonesty and thus I suggest we discount his words.
When I enrolled in Frank Dux class for the first time I was already a black belt and competed and won many local championships. Little did I know then it did not prepare me for the serious no-nonsense practical training being offered by Frank Dux. I left his school the first night in tears but loved it, at the same time, because at last I found someone who wasn’t out for a buck, as Ronin alleges. He wasn’t promoting people quickly in order to keep them coming back and sign up for more classes, make money by conducting one belt test after another..
Our school wasn’t that sugar coated belt factory which is why I suspect, at 15, Ronin, may have become disenchanted, with Dux (that is if he really was a student). Arguably, at fifteen, Ronin was not mature nor life wise to be in any position to judge Frank Dux credentials. By his own admission, Ronin certainly did not attend long enough to judge the process. To this end, I can tell you I have trained in multiple systems and I always find myself using Frank Dux and his Dux Ryu school as the benchmark by which to measure others by. Apparently, I am in good company as elite military and police forces around the world have embraced his system and teachings. This is not opinion but verified fact.
I seriously doubt Ronin quit because Dux misrepresented himself since I have never heard him make the wild allegations Ronin professes nor has he ever demonstrated the kind of bizarre behavior Ronin says he experienced.
One reason I doubt Ronin’s claims of his ever training with Dux for any length of time is that he claims he started and quit at age 15 but it isn’t until at least three years later (considering he had to be 18 to enlist) that his mother then got notice that she was being sued for her $1,500 non-payment in a breach of contract suit. If I am not mistaken, the statute of limitations wouldn’t allow for a suit like that to be filed three years after the fact, in California. And why would he wait three years to file? That error raises the suspicion Ronin is trying to paint Frank Dux out to be a money grubbing Jew “snake oil salesman” trying to take advantage of his poor elderly mother while Ronin is nobly off getting ready to defend us from the terrorists, is that it?
The Racist connotation is made clear. Why else would he insinuate and falsely allege Dux was out promoting it is from Judiasm Ninjitsu owes its roots? Maybe, it’s a reach for others but for me the implications seem, insidiously, clear.
In the midst of the very thorough training of us, his real students, Frank Dux made sure we were academically skilled, as well as, physically. He, like any great teacher, often points out that we need to look outside the boundaries of traditional Asian Martial Arts to better understand its past, present and future evolution. On numerous occasions he pointed out to me and my classmates the existence of other systems and their origins. One of which is a system still a virtually unknown martial art called, Abir.
Abir is an Ancient Martial Art reputedly used by the Hebrew people and is based on Hebrew Language, where each MA movement correspond, directly, to Judiac symbols. I recall Dux referring to the Star of David when lecturing us on Abir but not done in the context Ronin would have others believe. Frank Dux merely pointed out to students that according to his understanding of Abir one may easily draw an analogy that the intersecting triangles that makes up the “Star of David,” symbolizes, the interconnection between two opposing forces, or what in Judo/Jujitsu and other leading MA systems call the interconnection of the triangle of force, which from a birds eye view resembles the “Star of David”
The interconnection of the triangle of force is one of the first principles being taught now in MMA schools, under many different names. It is a MA high concept that historically pre-dates Shaolin Kung Fu and Prince Regent Shotoku’s visit to China from Japan from which all 1700 different Ninjitsu family systems, theoretically, originate from. (For more info on this see http://www.abirwarriorarts.com).
Hieroglyphs in Egypt referencing Abir support the scholarly theory. So, Dux wasn’t promoting Ninjitsu comes from the Jews as Ronin is attempting to mislead people into thinking but, in actuality, Frank Dux was presenting Abir and its history as an alternate point of view on how to judge our origins as Martial Artists. Cutting Ronin some slack I could see how Ronin was either too immature to understand this concept. Otherwise, I can only conclude he is being deceptive and has intentionally mischaracterized this event out of context as part of a shameful display of trade libel.
Consider this fact, Forbes magazine identifies 60% of trade libel on the internet as planted by business competitors hiding behind a pseudonym – gee let me guess Ronin cant disclose who he is because he is after all a secret agent for the US military, isn’t that what John Ronin represented? And if that actual is his REAL name why should we believe he isn’t out of touch because he would have to be to identify himself to anyone as being an intelligence agent, operating in Iraq and around the globe, hunting down terrorists?
I find it humorous that in his ranting Ronin alleges Dux made sensational wild claims that he chastises Frank Dux for, while on his own making equally or greater claims than Dux. Yet, being seen as a hypocrite certainly escaped Ronin, here, LOL.
At least, with Frank Dux one can take comfort in the fact his intelligence background has been verified through not only his Department of Defense Duty Discharge (DD 214), but legal counsel for HarperCollins, he is named as such in foreign government documents, identified as such by Iran Contra Congressional witnesses who also testified in court proceedings where he sued detractor’s Soldier of Fortune magazine for their libel and slander, somewhat reminiscent of Ronin’s ramblings.
When it looked like I had to drop out of Dux class because a personal family tragedy left us unable to continue to afford classes he was such a mercenary that he let me train for free, for several years. In which I never heard or saw anything close to what Ronin is portraying. And I wasn’t the exception because he put plenty of kids in my neighborhood on scholarship. Of course, he did this on one condition - we had to raise and then maintain our GPA.
He was such a money hungry charlatan that explains why he took an interest in us like a father we could go to for advice, making sure we stayed out of trouble and did our homework. In the early morning and afternoons he made himself available to us and at no cost he was tutoring us for free. Helping many of us who were struggling for a good grade and he even paid for kids lunches when it became obvious to him they were going without. I recall him buying groceries for the Waknine family, and several others. Mostly poor immigrant families who he’d help navigate through the naturalization process, which probably pissed off his fair share of Americans for American, types. A philosophy which is what I suspect Ronin ascribes to
Frank Dux has always been there for us and how appropriate this fathers day that I not only called him to wish him a happy father’s day but I should have the pleasure to share with others why that is. All the while call Ronin out and expose him for the mean spirited jealous and envious liar that he appears to be.
Yeah, if Frank Dux was so money hungry as Ronin attempts to unjustly make him out to be, then let Ronin also explain away “to me” in light of the fact Frank Dux provided me along with most of those other under privileged kids I knew their sparring equipment and uniforms. I am not talking one or two purchases here and there. I am talking entire neighborhoods, twenty, thirty people at a time.
Like most father figures, to be envied, Frank Dux has been subjected to undeserved, false and misleading allegations over the years. Perhaps this can be attributed to the fact he has lived a life bigger than life. Typically, a lot of this dissent can also be traced back to the fact he pissed off a lot of his business competitors. Why is that, because if you weren’t on a belt program in our school, our instructor, generally, charged $9.99 a month (with a guarantee lock in price for 24 months). It cost .30cents a day to train in his school. So if you couldn’t afford it chances are you were going without food, as well, and that is why he did his best to help everyone deserving of help and why he is such a big part of my life, and the lives of those who really know and were touched by him, unlike Ronin.
Many of the commercial schools couldn’t compete with Dux Ryu Ninjitsu schools price structure and many ended up closing their doors and have a bone to pick with him, still today.
I find it incredulous to assume he was growing real rich on that .30 cents a day student fee.… I know for a fact he kept the doors open by supplementing the costs of the schools out of his own pocket and he had more than one to support. He did this with his movie work and who knows what else, that was his deal traveling a good portion of the time but always making sure we were being cared for when he wasn’t there, like a good father.
In my over 25 years knowing the man I cannot recall anyone ever being turned away because they didn’t have the money for tuition. If people did go into collection it was done by the billing company, not Dux. So it is no surprise to me why he wouldn’t show up even if he was entitled to the money, as is in Ronin’s case. I recall a Purple Belt program cost $1,500 which means if $1,500 was owed then Ronin’s mom had a good reason to worry as he was training without paying for it but so what, what is his problem, really?
To further prove my point, let me point out that my instructor Frank Dux was one of the first persons to volunteer and bare the financial expense and brunt of criticism over his having enable the LAPD Jeopardy program to become a reality; a program that enabled many children in our neighborhood identified by police “to be at risk” to be placed into his MA school by LAPD, at no charge. For doing this, he received only the gratitude of those he helped, including the Association of Chiefs of Police.
Thanks to Frank Dux the LAPD Jeopardy program got the legs it desperately needed to become a reality and be expanded to include other activities like music classes, dance, etc. None of his MA business competitors were willing to do this, at the time! Not in sync with Frank Dux being that money grubbing Jew that Ronin is alleging, is it?
If Frank Dux was so money hungry and was all about looking good to other people as also being alleged by Ronin then let Ronin please explain away why is it Frank Dux took in disabled/disfigured children and taught them when the all the other schools in the area turned them away. A fact featured on national television “That’s Incredible”.
Dux started what he called Belt Programs in order to put people at ease because he wasn’t prone to rapidly advancing people. This way they shouldn’t think he was intentionally holding them back to collect more money, since there was no membership time limitation for Belt Programs. He did this chiefly for the purpose of wanting to instill the ideals of commitment and goal setting – SIGNIFICANT FACTS RONIN JUST HAPPEMED TO NEGLECT TO MENTION AND APPARENTLY FAILED TO ACHIEVE FOR HIMSELF, REGARDING DUX RYU.
Perhaps, his personal failure is the source of his real resentment, that is, if Ronin was in actuality ever a student of Dux Ryu. In all likelihood, Ronin probably quit not because of Frank Dux not living up to his expectations by not being the person he is, but because Ronin felt entitled to a rank he didn’t deserve. Typically, these types of people tend to lash out in order to compensate for their feelings of inadequacy that stems from being a quitter. Especially, when reminded of the wonderful opportunity and rich legacy one could have expected to have enjoyed and now must explain away, years later, why it is they cannot legitimately claim to be associated with a martial art legend like, Frank Dux. .
Ronin alleges it took him two hours by bus to get to Mr. Dux studio from Hollywood… Only one person consistently rode the bus from Hollywood that I and my classmates can recall and that was George Patouliotis, accompanied by his mother who certainly would have bumped into Ronin. An instructor now, like me, Sensei George doesn’t remember anyone but him doing that outside of one person whose name is not worth mentioning and that voluntarily left our school and system, while in disgrace. By the way, another strong “tell” that Ronin is obviously not being absolutely truthful about this too, is that it DOES NOT TAKE TWO HOURS TO GET FROM HOLLYWOOD TO NORTH HOLLYWOOD BY BUS!
Yes, Mr. Dux has a collection of Ninja drawings he commissioned. It was part of his research for his book he provides to his Black Belts and one specialty class everyone had to complete. Guess what, not surprisingly in Ronin’s need to fabricate facts, there has never been any artwork with a Ninja lifting his cover and insects coming out - Another falsehood stated on Ronin’s part. It is why I think what information he has is really secondhand or he is prone to be making things up, as he goes.
Nor is it remotely believable Frank Dux offered to sell any real swords wrapped in parachute cord and “dipped in the ashes of his instructor,” while peddling adventure stories of him being in Honduras - that’s way over the top, don’t you think? I can say this with utmost confidence because it is totally out of character and goes against the grain of what we know to be true, since in our system swords have to be earned and are reserved, only presented when a student achieves their Black Belt. Frank Dux never offered to sell books of his having operated in Honduras, either. Pure nonsense.
I also recall the “break-in” Ronin refers to and destruction of OUR dojo property. “Iga Team? Listening devices?” If Frank Dux said any such a thing to Ronin, Ronin is obviously probably spinning it out of context just like everything else he has alleged and that smatters of a past event, so far.
I recall seeing Frank Dux right after the break-in. He was disturbed that his property was trashed since this included personal photos of him and his instructor but he was nonetheless, cool as cucumber, not frantic. However, it’s just like his sense of humor to say something offhanded, particularly, since Ronin conveniently also failed to mention (because he obviously to me was not there) that THE BURGLARS WERE CAUGHT WHILE IN THE ACT AND TAKEN INTO CUSTODY AND CONVICTED! HIS PROPERTY RETURNED! NOTHING TO BE FRANTIC ABOUT!
Gee whiz, if Ronin was around then how is it he does not mention how one of the burglars (out on bail) appeared before his sentencing and apologized to our class and admitted he and his accomplice were students of Frank Dux business competitor - Shadows of Iga Society/ Steven Hayes ninjutsu – “Team Iga?” Ronin’s words, or the burglar’s word’s, not Dux’s
Regarding Frank Dux uncanny ability of bouncing a screw driver and catching it, how is it that Ronin also conveniently fails to mention that along with his consistent bouncing and catching the makeshift weapon, Frank Dux was capable of immediately hurling it with pinpoint accuracy, hit a moving target. A feat I also witnessed an
